Global Internet Governance,
Digital Empowerment and Security
Alliance (GLIDES)

Objective

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) empower people on the ground. However, there are few initiatives that bring CSOs together to voice their thoughts and best practices. Our objective is to create an alliance of CSOs from across the world as part of Civil20 that enables an inclusive, open, non-discriminatory, and fair digital society through collective efforts. This alliance will organize monthly meetings, workshops, training programs, seminars & deliberations on various current and emerging topics, as also provide a platform for CSOs to run activities such as sharing “replicable” best practices and success stories. This alliance will be launched during the Civil20 (C20) summit on Technology & Security for One World scheduled at Coimbatore, India, on 13 & 14 May 2023 (www.tech4world.org)

The Need

The Internet is the most important critical infrastructure today. Ensuring the security, safety, scalability, and stability of the Internet is of prime importance to all stakeholders. CSO representation is not adequate in bodies such as ICANN, UN IGF, ISoC, etc. There is also an inadequate mechanism to monitor and measure the health of the Internet on an ongoing basis, sharing the results with the stakeholder communities in the country. This alliance will be a launching pad for evolving multistakeholder policy-making process for security and internet governance as also associated pressing issues such as digital access, internet shutdowns, safe harbor, net neutrality, data privacy, data governance, cyberstalking, online harassment, cyber security, fake news, multilingual internet, and digital rights.
