The C20 working group on Sustainable and Resilient Communities is launching a Global seedball campaign, in collaboration with Ayudh, the youth wing of Mata Amritanandamayi Math. The campaign is an initiative to encourage people to sow seeds in a more efficient and environmentally friendly way.

The campaign, initiated under the guidance of Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi, Chair, Civil20 2023, typically involves producing and distributing seedballs to volunteers who can then plant them in public spaces such as parks, roadside verges, and other areas in need of ecological restoration. By planting these seedballs, individuals can make a significant impact on the environment by helping to increase green spaces and encourage biodiversity.

The Seedball campaign has gained popularity in recent years due to its low cost and high impact on the environment. It is a great way to involve communities in environmental conservation efforts and raise awareness about the importance of protecting our natural resources.

What is Seedball?

A seedball, also known as seed bomb or earth ball, is a small ball or pellet made up of soil and seeds, often mixed with clay and other organic materials to hold the ball together. Seedballs are an ancient technique used for reforestation and soil restoration and are now gaining popularity as a modern method of ecological restoration. They are designed to be thrown or scattered in areas where vegetation is desired and rely on natural rainfall or watering to germinate and grow into mature plants. The clay and organic material in the seedball protect the seeds from harsh environmental conditions and predators, allowing for successful germination and growth.

Seedball Making

Materials needed:

  1. Dry red soil or clay powder
  2. Compost or dry cow dung powder
  3. Seeds of your choice
  4. Water
  5. Bowl or bucket
  6. Newspaper or sheet
  7. Tray or plate

Steps

Mix 4 parts dry soil or clay powder with 6 parts compost or dry cow dung powder in a bowl or bucket.

  • Slowly add water to the mixture and knead it until you have a moist, but not wet dough (a roti dough consistency).
  • Make small lemon-sized balls out of the dough (size of ball may depend on the size of seed used).

In each ball, insert 1-2 seeds, roll, and smoothen the ball to close any cracks. The seed should be well-hidden in the ball.

Place the seedballs on a newspaper or sheet and let them dry in the shade for at least 6-8 hours.

Once dry, place the seedballs in the sun for another 6-8 hours. Steps 5 and 6 are vital to ensure no cracks appear on seedballs.

Store the seedballs in a cool, dry place until you’re ready to use them.
